PMI Thailand Chapter

The process of forming the Bangkok, Thailand PMI Chapter began in July 1999 with the approval of the Letter of Intent from PMI Global. Since then, a group of professionals within the project management profession have worked to make this chapter a reality. The Chapter completed the requirements to become a fully fledged PMI Chapter in September 2001. Since then, these volunteers have worked strenuously to increase awareness on the importance of the project management profession in Thailand.

Presently, the Chapter has more than 270 members, with the majority as Thai nationals, representing more than 60 companies in the fields of telecommunications, information technology, oil and gas, engineering and construction. Few members from Universities and Government organizations have also enrolled.

The Project Management Professional (PMP) credential is offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Public and private organizations employ PMP certified project managers to improve success rate of projects across all knowledge areas by applying a standardized set of project management principles based on PMI’s Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®) Guide.

Project Management is a growing profession in Thailand. Many organizations have embraced project management as a disciplined approach towards ensuring project success. Many have also instituted training programs to help prepare their employees to manage projects across boundaries and specifically ones that involve Virtual Team Management. PMI Bangkok Thailand Chapter exists not only to support such initiatives but to help increase them specifically around organizations in the public sector.

With Thailand embarking on a set of mega-projects in various industries including transportation, water management, telecommunications, construction, and others, it is imperative that all institutions, public or private, adopt a renowned “Project Management Standard” for better project control. PMBOK® Guide published and owned by PMI presents a set of standard guidelines for project management across any industry. This standard has been widely used globally since 1996. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) which assigns standards in USA recognizes the PMBOK® as an American National Standard (BSR/PMI 99-001-2013). All standards owned and published by PMI are widely recognized and used across all industries worldwide.

PMI Bangkok Thailand Chapter has therefore solicited the support of experienced professionals and academicians (certified PMPs) in Thailand to help translate the PMBOK® for use across industries in Thailand.
